Originally a silver mining village, La Thuile is set in woodland and now consists of a combination of attractive traditional old buildings, including several small family run hotels, with the modern residence of Planibel conveniently located right on the slopes. It is essentially a quiet resort, with a predominantly Italian clientèle, particularly at weekends.
The ski area links with La Rosiere in France to offer over 150km pistes suitable for all standards of skier. La Thuile has an excellent snow record with predominantly uncrowded, north/north east facing wide open pistes enjoying wonderful mountain views.
La Thuile is situated in the Aosta Valley and enjoys wonderful views of the Mont Blanc massif, and from the top of the ski area, of the Tarantaise mountains in France and to the Matterhorn on the Italian/Swiss boarder. La Thuile connects with the French resort of La Rosiere offering wide open slopes, often uncrowded, and an extensive ski area suitable for all abilities. The La Thuile lift pass allows a day in another resort in the Aosta Valley namely Courmayeur, Pila, Cervinia, Champoluc and Gressoney
Shopping
There is a good supermarket and butchers located in the Planibel centre, a bakery and several excellent delicatessens selling local cheeses, cured meats, salamis, fresh pasta, wines and liquors. There are also some charming shops selling handcrafted gifts, and of course a tobacconist, pharmacy and sports shops with ski and mountaineering equipment. There is also a weekly market on Saturday.
Cafes, Bars and Restaurants
La Thuile has a good selection of friendly restaurants and bars serving excellent Italian fare including antipasta and pasta specialties of the Aosta region together with pizzas and fondues.
La Grotta is popular for cheap pasta and pizza from its traditional wooden oven, La Bricole and Le Rascard for fondues and other traditional dishes. Downstairs at Taverna Coppapan, enjoy great service and a large variety of piping hot pizzas made to your choice. Or for something different you can eat TexMex at Pepita Cafe.
For those with a sweet tooth the wonderful “Chocolat” café serves all things chocolaty including chocolate fondue!
Après ski is low key based around several unpretentious bars, including Bar La Buvette at the bottom of the gondola, and La Bricolette which serves good wines and cocktails, whilst La Bricole Pub and the Fantasia nightclub at Planibel are popular haunts for something a little bit more lively.
